Lunch Debates ImageBetween June-November 2010 we have been running the Robots and Avatars Lunch Debate series. This series of debates, with a diverse group of experts and professionals, looks ahead to a workplace which will involve a mix of robots, avatars, tele-presence and real time presence. Rich educational resources are being generated including Vodcasts for young people, teachers and researchers to use and explores issues such as the implications of artificial intelligence, ethics in digital space, the future of technology in healthcare, the future world of work and skills required for future digital careers.

body>data>space offer a suite of five Robots and Avatars Learning Experiences that facilitate the types of skill-sets, aptitudes, resources and methodologies that young people will require for the workplace of the future. The Learning Experiences are aimed at helping to prepare young people for their future jobs and careers in a fast moving and technological 21st century. They offer students (and teachers) the chance to acquire the variety of new digital skills that will be necessary in the future workplace.

The learning experiences explore:

  • Telepresence
  • Avatars
  • Robotics
  • Virtual/Physical Events
  • Social Media

Through the Learning Experiences, issues of identity, communication, collaboration, teamwork, problem solving and critical thinking for the 21st century are explored. The Learning Experiences also develop “soft skills” including self-confidence, motivation, enthusiasm and energy.

The Learning Experiences are currently being adopted by teachers across the UK for the 2010-1011 academic year.

body>data>space is a learning provider for NESTA’s idiscover education programme working with schools in London (The Harris Federation), Manchester and the Scottish Highlands which helps young people develop skills and attributes needed in an innovation driven society. A range of educational experiences are offered covering science, technology, engineering, maths, enterprise and the creative sector.

An innovative project designed to help extend the understanding of young people’s needs for the future world of work. It envisions the skill-sets, aptitudes, resources and methodologies that will be required by today’s young people at work in 2020 onwards, given that many of the jobs they will do have not yet been invented.

Bringing together a diverse group of experts and specialists to research, discuss and debate, Robots and Avatars explores how young people will work and play with new representational forms of themselves and others in virtual and physical life in the next 10-15 years. It examines multi-identity evolutions of today’s younger generations within the context of a world in which virtual and physical spaces are increasingly blended.

A participatory web and events led programme is taking place in the UK and internationally with connected educational activities is taking place across 2010 and onwards, with key partners body>data>space and NESTA.

on the move logoOn-the-Move presents its exploration of virtual mobility in the contemporary performing arts ‘Excited Atoms’.

Excited Atoms by Judith Staines outlines a history of virtual mobility in performance, presents the main types of work with inspiring current examples and traces some of the most critical issues and motivations for artists, cultural producers and promoters to collaborate, share, make, question, present and innovate using virtual mobility.

In depth interviews with twenty-one key practitioners, cultural managers and critical observers present informed points of view from around the world. A specially commissioned essay from Ghislaine Boddington (body>data>space) traces a personal pathway from the early nineties through creative collaborations in performance telematics. A Glossary explains some of the terms and helps demystify technologies and areas of creative practice. A research section Explore More presents over 150 links to artists, projects, platforms, reading and other references to extend the exploration of virtual mobility.

Learn more about networked performance … enlarging the action radius … participatory strategies … one-way, two-way and third spaces in interactive performance … virtual stages … avatars … live streaming of work in progress … transdisciplinarity … and so much more

The study was funded by the Fundacion Autor and has been downloaded over 10,000 times in last 2 months.

Gabriela Tudor Imagebody>data>space supports the Gabriela Tudor Foundation Bucharest, in partnership with the Romanian Cultural Centre / Ratiu Foundation, London and hosted 2010 grant awardee Corina Bucea this summer in London. The next call to Romanian Cultural Managers for this UK-based Grant of £2500 is open now.

“The Robots and Avatars lunch debate has proven to be an invaluable contribution to expert discourse on AR and IA learning environments. On questions of identity, and its occasional political implications, it has established a platform from which many new initiatives will arise”

“Immensely encouraging to see not only that such productive discussions are taking place but that the focus is the future for young people”

“Robots and Avatars will be a part of our collective futures, now we have a chance to day dream about how science-fiction can become science-fact”

bds is 5 years old!body>data>space had its 5th Birthday in March and we celebrated with a buzz around our involvement in two fantastic long term projects, Robots and Avatars with our key partner NESTA, and the MADE a topical international collaboration with EU support.

Its over 20 years now since members of the core team initiated our deep exploration of “the body at the centre of digital technologies” (1989 though shinkansen/Future Physical) and now in 2010 we have naturally been able to make significant shifts into challenging new sectors.

Evolving into the educational and architectural sectors, extending our professional development expertise and utilising our in-depth knowledge of human technology interfaces and virtual mobility, body>data>space is enjoying the enquiry and investigation if these debates.

Our long term experience and knowledge of interdisciplinary, interauthorship processes (collaboration, co-creation, group work), and of telematics (video transmission technologies, streaming, virtual mobility) have finally come into their own – our expertise is in demand.

Below we detail several key projects, downloadable reports and events for all to attend. Do contact us directly for any further details or if you are interested in partnering in any projects – at this stage we are open to all new connections!!!

Enjoy the summer, do keep checking the extensive content we are adding to our websites and we hope to see you very soon :)

IA10 (Interactive Architecture 2010)IA10 (Interactive Architecture 2010) takes place as part of the London Festival of Architecture and will be held in Aldgate area of London on 24th June.

Ghislaine is leading a panel at this forum for the building design community, and co-facilitating the sharing of ideas and experiences around exploiting new technologies to enable the built environment to dynamically respond to people in or around it.

This conference day explores advances in display, sensing, environmental and computing technologies that are creating opportunities to make truly responsive buildings a reality.

Please join the dedicated web channel at www.metworksinteractive.org to reserve a ticket for the conference and help in shaping the dialogue! For any other queries, please contact info@metropolitanworks.org. Co-hosted by Metropolitan Works (part of London Metropolitan University) and Fiddian Warman (Soda).
