Robots and Avatars – Collaborative and Intergenerational Futures is a two year programme of work extending our research in the UK into Europe. The project explores a near future world where collaborations between robots, avatars, virtual worlds, telepresence and real-time presence will be increasingly common. With co-organisers KIBLA (Slovenia) and AltArt (Romania), the project looks at emergence of the European (virtual/physical) citizen and examines multi-identity evolutions and virtual mobility.

The project comprises of a distinctive programme of activities including, artist commissions, a touring exhibition, learning experiences, live streamed debates, a week-long camp/residency, a website and a book.

It will bring together an intergenerational group of artists, cultural players, young people and experts from around Europe, to create a community that will explore and extend our understanding of working and creating in a 21st century world of virtual/physical co-operation.

body>data>space is one of 11 organisations in the UK to have have received lead organiser funding from the EU Culture Programme (2007-13) for Robots and Avatars – Collaborative and Intergenerational Futures.

What are the challenges for 21st century artistic mobility programmes? What could be a sound professional co-production model for the future? How can new interactive technologies aid the evolution of the collaborative management and creation processes inherent in such co-productions? What does it mean in term of true inter-disciplinary partnership? How can new technological tools, such as tele-presence and social networks, strengthen, develop and give more visibility to a mobility project, enabling audiences to interact with artists in a deeper way?

We are very pleased to announce that UK artists Joseph Hyde is the winner of the MADE Commission. Joseph will cretate me and my shadow , a multisite telepresence project taking place in four European cities (Istanbul, London, Mons and Paris). It consists of a virtual environment experienced in four installations (one in each city), which act as portals to an online space. These portals are also remotely viewable through a website, which will frame and document the project. The portals are built around the Microsoft Kinect sensor, which is revolutionary because it enables the introduction of full motion capture into a domestic environment. me and my shadow expands this technology to allow a new form of interaction with collaborative 3D space. The aim of the project is to explore new relationships between physical and virtual worlds, made possible by this technology. This creates permeable media interfaces which are distinct from current forms of virtual, augmented or pervasive media.

The Call for Proposals solicited 88 applications from 14 countries Europe wide. The UK entries were of high quality, with 10 reaching the final pre-selection of 20. On the final jury 6 out of the final 7 selected were from the UK, with commendations from the jury for the excellence of the UK applicants in terms of use of social medias and audience involvement within the creation processes, as well as innovative distribution concepts for furthering access of the public to the final work.

The project will be co-produced by the four MADE partners (body>data>space [UK], centre des arts [FR], Transcultures [BE], BoDig [TR]) and the European Commission. The project will be developed in  four residencies in the four partner locations (Istanbul, London, Mons, Paris) and the final outcome will be presented in June 2012 at centre des arts, Enghien-les-Bains, France and the other partner locations. The UK residency is supported by the National Theatre.

The MADE jury also gave special commendations to the following four projects:

MADE (Mobility for Digital Arts in Europe) launched in London on November 24th 2010. body>data>space hosted the first workshop at the French Institute and NESTA with participation from a range of UK experts in Telepresence/Virtual Worlds and Media Facades.

MADE will practically examine and explore forms and models of European digital co-production, using topical case studies, in particular, through the commissioning and production of a live/contemporary digital work (performance and/or installation).

This is a co-operation between lead organiser centre des arts d’Enghien-les-Bains (Paris, France) and partners body>data>space (London, UK), Transcultures (Mons, Belgium) and BoDig (Istanbul, Turkey), in the framework of the EU’s Culture programme (2007-2013).
