Club Research was started two years ago after we recognised the many cross-overs between performance art, the dance floor, experimental musical styles and dance music as well as a belief that clubs are currently one of the most challenging, innovative enviroments around. Club Research is at this crossing point between performance and clubbing, it takes the professional production of theatre/live-art and the technological advancement in clubs to explore a future ecologies for infotainment and performance. The aim is to create a challenging and adventurous evening in a multi-choice environment, exposing people who normally go to the theatre, to the sense enhancement of a modern club and people who normally go to clubs, to the world of performance and live-art and both to that little bit more. C.R. mixes sound ( D.J.'s, live digital audio creation , sound installations, interactive music software and live groups. ), vision ( live interactive video, multiple film/slide projection and vision mixing ), movement ( live performance extracts, site-specific dance works and dance floor improvisations - Movement Jockey's ) and technology ( internet, C.D. Rom's, demo's of the latest creative hard/software, Koan, Oval and new uses of common technologies ).

Since it's conception 5 events have taken place in different London venues to great success - attracting huge interest from both the art's sector and the clubbing scene and obtaining broad national, international media coverage in the arts, music and popular press/radio.

New Live Art / Music Commissions

shinkansen has commissioned three pieces by British artists who recognise the many crossovers between performance, the dance floor, experimental music/dance styles and dance music. Flexible in form for presentation in both concert/theatre and club style contexts, these commissions take their inspiration from clubs - as currently one of the most challenging and innovative enviroments around. The commissions will be created across March - June 1997 with the first presentations being within Club Research events in June 1997.
The three commissions are -

Axis (Esther Barton/Michelle Gaskell) -
a movement based commission from a Bristol based group renowned for creating multi-media live art for club spaces. This commission will create an enviroment which includes 3 separate and self-sufficent live performance spaces around the venue for audiences to experience. The main components of this will be technology based music and sound, high energy choreographed, improvised and virtual dance and multi-layered interactive film and video.
Neil Joliffe -
a London based composer working with electronic and state of the art media whose work is based around human/machine relationships. This commission will be developing work in progress for live performance. It uses sound pads, infra-red sensors and motion detectors placed around the space to trigger samples of sound as a tool for composing or controlling sound parameters.
Kingsuk Biswas (Bedouin Ascent) -
is a young London composer producing high quality work in a British/Asian context."A vanguard figure in the area of intelligent techno" (The Wire),his work embraces African, Gamelan and Eastern influences explored through electro, funk and industria twisted into freeform textures and sound shapes. Kingsuck will create a piece specifically for live performance on a club floor, it will explore use of film/video links with sound. The piece will also be adaptable to more concert style touring.
