European Choreographic Forum

European Choreographic Forum has been running, now for 5 years & has almost become an institution in it's own right. As with all shinkansen's network project's, the Forum and the network that organises it (Butterfly Effect Network) is consitently undergoing a process of trans-mutation, with the other projects shinkansen has been running (Club Research,Club Oval, The Risk Factor). These projects are all taking on the shape of a Trans-Medium Laboratory.

E.C.F. has inspired, delighted and brought together (to begin with) choreographer's & dancer's / movement artist's from across Europe, (Vera Mantero, Wayne McGregor, Fiona Wright) as it progressed composer's & sound artist's were included then digital inovator's and before long the Forum was not just about choreography & movement, anymore.

shinkansen & it's European partner's,( see Member Organisations below )have already started Future Physical to deal with issues arising from the Forum & to expand on this, to take the original context to the 21st©.

But what can come from progression is a timely busines and we are all looking at what E.C.F. means to everybody.

One logical step is the development of an on-line archive, of 5 year's of video, audio & text account's of the Forum's, of some of the most contemporary European choreographer's, training and researching material that eventualy ended up as pieces. But the planning and construction for such an expansion is taking careful thought, we have problems enough just looking at 5 year's worth of media. The archive for a start would have to be able to index European productions and the starting stages of E.C.F., the particpants, the point's of view -

this archive promises to hold some of the most exciting multimedia, research documentation, in Europe, we welcome everybodies comments & idea's, on what could come out of this.

The pages linked to below are from the last European Choreographic Forum 5, held at Dartington International Summer School, Devon, Britain.

It was a great sucsess for us, a real integration of live presence, nature & technology. Everyone's head was spinning from the new ideas. This is the highlight of the year for the Butterfly Effect Network, the pan-European producers network that shinkansen initiated in 1992.

A great thanks goes out to Diva Pictures, Ealing Studios, London for all the interactive video equipment, you can find out more about them & download some video clips from

going Diva Pictures

Another huge thank-you goes out to SSEYO Koan for their help on the digital sound side. SSEYO Koan are the Internet Music Company & Creators of Koanmusic, they provided a SSEYO Koan Pro for the Forum's participants to experience and experiment with. Koanmusic is an organic music artform in which music is created in real-time & which varies each time it is played. I.B.M. provided the multimedia P.C. from their wide range & were delighted to be able to support SSEYO and the Forum in researching new and exciting art projects this way. Shinkansen are able to offer composers and creators the chance to experience this amazing new platform, please contact us for further information. For more info. on SSEYO Koanmusic
